Take The Crown, KC

It’s finally here. For the first time in my lifetime the Kansas City Royals are playing in the WORLD freakin’ SERIES. In honor of tonight’s game… Here are a few things I’ve found on the web that make my heart happy.

An Open Letter to Kansas City // Party at Paul Rudd’s Mom’s House! // Emotional Win // Fan Uses Finny’s Tickets // Super Fan! // Royals-Lorde  // And last but not least, this great story on TCU’s own Brandon Finnegan.

Go get ’em, Royals!

Honorary Teammates

One of the many reasons I love college sports is how much it can affect the fans. From the little kiddos sitting in the stands who look up to the student-athletes, to the 50 year-old-men who have had season tickets since they graduated from college, everyone is full of passion and excitement. The love for college athletics is incredible. Something even more incredible, however, is how the student athletes take on honorary teammates.

Two of my favorite college teams, Kansas State University and Texas Christian University, have taken on some honorary teammates. The Kansas State football team has Mr. Kaiden Schroeder, 8 year-old Kansas boy who is battling leukemia. TCU baseball has Super Hero Micah Ahern, 5 year old boy who has been battling cancer for the past few years.

Kaiden became a Wildcat when Ryan Mueller, number 44, took a special interest in the young boy’s story. It all started from a message board, which shows how strong the digital connection is these days. Ryan found out about a post by Kaiden’s mom asking for some sort of Kansas State memorabilia, Ryan did one better. He brought Fiesta Bowl jerseys to Kaiden and his sister Ashlynn and hung out with them in the hospital. This was the start of a beautiful thing.

Over the past year, Ryan and his teammates have spent time FaceTiming with Kaiden, visiting his family in the hospital, bringing him to football games and most recently bring Kaiden out on the field for the Spring Game. This has to be one of the most heartwarming videos I have seen all year. I only wish I could have been in Manhattan to see it for myself.

Kaiden wears number 44 and takes the field. He runs 30 yards, “protected” by a huddle of Wildcats and scores! My words don’t do it justice, watch the KStateSports Instagram vid.

TCU baseball has a similar relationship with Micah. Micah and the baseball team connected through an organization called Team Impact. The organization reached out to Coach Schlossnagle and immediately he said the team wanted to get to know Micah. Fast forward a little while, Micah is now the first signed member of the class of 2027. He’s thrown out the first pitch at a TCU season opener. He frequents TCU baseball games whenever he can. His team raised over $12,000 during the Neuroblastoma 5K. He’s become a rock for the team, just as much as the team has become a rock for him.

Take a look in the stands on a game day when Micah is attendance and you will instantly feel happier. Micah is always surrounded by people and has a huge grin on his face. When the games are over, Micah is greeted by the team. His happiness is completely and utterly contagious. Micah is what it means to be a Horned Frog, he has spirit, he has heart and he has fight.

This is what makes college sports so special. It goes beyond the field, it goes beyond the Ws and Ls; it changes lives.

Final Four

I have been given some phenomenal opportunities during the last five or so years. The most recent of them being working the Final Four and National Championship games in Dallas (er, well, Arlington if we’re being honest here!). I worked the tournament that Dallas/Big 12 hosted last year, but this is the real deal. I didn’t realize just how awesome this oppurtunity was until yesterday.

I mean sure, people have been telling me how jealous they were that I was working all weekend and I did get some wicked sweet swag, but nothing seemed surreal until arriving at the stadium yesterday.

I have a pretty sweet gig, I’m helping with the press conferences. Nothing too crazy, I’m a mic holder, but I get to be around for all of the excitement! In addition, I help out Laura and the rest of the Big 12 staff as needed. I love it all. No matter how important or unimportant you may think your job is, it truly is crucial to making everything a success.

This tournament is crazy. The amount of people here for it, the demand of a flawless event, the NCAA pressures, everything is top notch. Expectations are set high and I do believe that Dallas is exceeding them.

Here’s to a great rest of the tournament weekend and a stellar learning experience. Hopefully this isn’t my last Final Four that I’ll be attending, but it’s certainly been one to remember!

March Madness

Let me be frank, I’m not the queen of bracket challenges, but hell yeah I enjoy them! I’ve gone through phases (school colors, mascots, big 12, attractive players, colleges I applied to, skill level, coaches, you name it) with how I fill out my bracket… and at this point in my bracket-filling-life, I tend to overlap and combine some old bracket filling styles.

Some of my favorites this year & why:

Wichita State- hometown heroes-ish. I’ve never been an anti-WSU fan, but I’ve also never been a huge WSU fan. It has always been fun watching them succeed over the years in baseball and basketball. I sure wouldn’t mind them proving the world wrong and continuing on their undefeated season #watchus

Michigan- after working the tournament last year in Dallas, I have been converted to a semi Michigan fan. The boys played with such heart all weekend and were poised in the press conference (and even better guys when you talked to them one on one) Not to mention they (Mitch) were easy on the eye. So, go Michigan, go!

KState- unfortunately, the Wildcats have a tough bracket schedule ahead of them, but that won’t stop me for rooting for the guys in purple! The team has had it’s ups and downs, but ultimately deserve a chance to dance for a few rounds. #EMAW

Florida- call me a tshirt wearer, because I love watching this team play and I’m rooting for them– however I know little about their team. One things for certain- the state of Florida is wrecking shop this year in athletics.

OU, OSU, bayLOL, Iowa State- some Big 12 wins would sure be nice! It would make me feel better about TCU now winning a conference game all year… And it would be great for the conference as a whole! #big12sports

Let the madness begin!
